Is An Acne Outbreak A Sign Of Pregnancy

By: La Hunter

On becoming a young adult, most teenagers leave their childhood problems and childish mannerisms behind, even acne, the adolescent scourge, diminishes as people mature. Most young women in their twenties have forgotten about acne, however some women do get an odd pimple or two prior to menstruation.

Acne, is the most common skin disorder, it is suffered by millions of people and, to date, the exact cause of the disorder is unknown, although science has discovered a number of triggers that will cause an outbreak of acne to occur. One of these is the hormonal upheaval in a woman's body when she falls pregnant.

A severe acne outbreak during pregnancy can be difficult to control, as a number of preparations that are used for the treatment of acne, contain retinoids or salicylic acid, which are to be avoided during pregnancy, because they may have harmful effects on the unborn child.

A woman, who suffers from an unexpected outbreak of acne, should not jump to the conclusion that she is pregnant. This could be the case, however, an acne bout is more likely to be caused by one, or a number of other factors. Acne affects individuals in many different ways, and a woman who stops taking the contraceptive pill, may develop acne symptoms because of the sudden drop in estrogen levels.

It is difficult to pinpoint the direct cause of an acne outbreak. We know that when something is amiss in the body's system it triggers the sebaceous glands to become overactive, and produce excessive amounts of sebum. Extreme amounts of body oil pass through the pores and soak the surface skin, thus preventing dead skin cells from naturally shedding. Dead cells then clog the skin's pores, trapping the oil beneath, which erupts under pressure, and causes various stages of acne symptoms to appear on the body.

Some people can readily adapt to an increase in sebum, and show no symptoms, or at least very mild symptoms of acne, whereas others can suffer severe, or even extreme attacks of the disorder. The radiant glow that is often seen on the faces of women during pregnancy, is attributed to the increased production of sebum that takes place, because of the hormonal changes that are occurring within their bodies.

Adults that become stricken with a sudden attack of acne should really look for any recent changes to their diet, the toiletries they use, washing detergents or the water source. Tie the hair back and keep the hands away from the face as much as possible. Wash no more than twice a day and use only cool or lukewarm water. If there is a need to use soap, use mild natural soap and wash with your hands, don't scrub with a flannel. If you have recently moved to a new area, try bathing every other day, just in case the water quality is causing a problem.

Women, who undergo an unexpected outbreak of acne are not necessarily pregnant, but those who suffer from acne during their pregnancy need to be wary of acne preparations. If an outbreak cannot be controlled by using natural remedies, or it gets worse, then you must seek professional advice. Many preparations contain ingredients that could affect the unborn child.
