Baby Acne Can Be A Worry
By: La HunterAn unexpected worry that can take the edge off the happy moments that accompany the birth of a new born baby, is the appearance of acne outbreaks that mar the natural beauty of the baby's skin. Many babies are born with rashes of some kind, eczema, seborrhea or baby acne. The exact cause of baby acne is not known, but it is generally accepted that it is caused by an excessive amount of hormones passed from the mother to the baby during delivery.
Sometimes, baby acne does not appear until the baby is a few weeks old, and this is also considered as being the result of hormonal activity in the newborn baby. Baby acne does cause some concern for the child's parents, however it is really nothing to worry about as, unlike some other skin disorders, it will clear up fairly quickly, without the need for medication.
The condition is similar to teen acne with pimples and lumps, except that it will have no emotional effects on the baby, who will be quite unperturbed by the complaint. The people most affected by baby acne are the parents, who may tend to grimace each time they look at their disfigured, but otherwise normal, healthy child.
Treating the newborn's acne symptoms is fairly straight forward, don't squeeze the zits, as this could cause scarring, do not use any acne preparations that are available over the counter, as they would be too severe to use on a baby. Wash the baby's skin with warm water and a very mild baby soap, nothing else, no oils or lotions, as they could exacerbate the condition.
Seborrhea can also affect a newborn baby, and it appears as a greasy, scaly rash on the the face chest or groin are. It is also known as cradle cap, causing scaly crusts to develop on the scalp. It can be controlled by shampoos and lotions, however it is difficult to cure, and may remain with a child until adolescence. The cause of seborrhea is unknown and is referred to as dandruff in adults.
During the first few months of life, young babies can develop eczema, which is a common skin complaint that can affect people of all ages. The infection appears as an itchy, inflamed or scaly patch on the face, neck or chest, although it can strike any part of the body, including fingers and toes. As this disorder will irritate the baby, a healthcare professional should be consulted to treat the child. Children have an irresistible urge to scratch an itch, and in the case of eczema, scratching will only exacerbate the condition.
Baby acne will clear up, normally within a relatively short period, so it is really nothing to worry about. On the other hand, eczema or seborrhea, can affect a person for many years, even for the rest of their life.
